Stairlifts 101 Part 3
Welcome to the third installment of ‘Stairlifts 101’ our bite-sized guide to stairlift basics. In these posts we talk about some of the most fundamental aspects of stairlifts, to give newcomers a solid base of basic knowledge which will help them in their search for their perfect model.
In part three we are looking at more of the features that commonly appear across various different models of stairlift.
Folding Armrest / Footrest
To conserve space when the lift is not in use and to allow people to use the stairs with as little obstruction as possible, most stairlifts arm and foot rests fold away when not in use. Presenting a much smaller obstacle at the top and the bottom of the stairs makes life easier for non stairlift users.
The rests can be pulled up to fold them away after getting off the lift. A more advanced version of this appears on the Stannah Solus model which has a ‘one step folding system’ that folds away both arm and foot rests in one smooth movement by just folding up the arms.
Seat Belts
Seat belts are a standard safety fitting on stairlifts and add an extra layer of security for the passenger traveling up and down the stairs.
Seat belts really are a must and make sure you check to ensure your chosen model has one and that it is comfortable for you to use.
Key Switch
A Key Switch enables a stairlift to be de-activated completely when not in use to ensure no unauthorized passengers can ride it. A stairlift can present an almost irresistible temptation to a small child and to safe guard against any accidents, you can simply turn-off the lift with the key and remove it, immobilizing it and keeping the grandchildren safe.
Most key switches are located beneath one of the arm rests, but the position can vary. It is a great feature for anyone who needs the extra assurance of knowing the lift cannot be operated while they are not there.
That is the end of this edition of ‘stairlifts 101’, we hope it has helped you get a grip on a few more features that you can expect to come across in your stairlift search. In part four we will take a look in more detail at curved stairlifts.
