Benefits Of Live-In Care For Elderly People

Many older people will reach a time in their lives when the domestic work of running their home starts to become difficult, especially if they live alone. Perhaps some help preparing meals would make life easier and maybe a little help is needed with bathing and personal care, also feelings of loneliness might be increasing as a result of less companionship and long periods of time alone.

Family members can sometimes jump to the conclusion that moving to a residential care home is the best solution to these problems for an elderly relative. But most older people, given the choice, are likely to prefer to remain living independently at home for as long as possible.

There is an increasingly popular alternative to residential care. A professionally managed live-in carer scheme can offer a much better all-round care solution for an older person. Establishing a rota of two or three preferred live-in carers brings new friendship into their lives and creates a real sense of security, stability and independence at home.

Live-in carers will typically take charge of all the general housework; the shopping and cooking, the laundry, cleaning etc. The carer will be available at all times to provide the older person with all aspects of their personal care help such as dressing/undressing, washing, showering, bathing, oral care, hair care, shaving, continence care and toileting.

A live-in carer offers companionship and enables an elderly person to retain many social activities such as going to church, the pub, a restaurant, for a walk, to play cards with, and so on. The “at risk” part of living alone in their own home is also removed.

Since 1980, thousands of elderly people have benefited from the Live-In Carer Services of Able Community Care and have enjoyed the long term care that they provide in England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands. In fact, it’s not unusual for Able Community Care to provide over ten years of continuous, unbroken live-in care cover for their clients. The staff of Able take pride in the close working relationships they routinely establish with their elderly clients, their families and advocates; helping to enable their clients to live stress-free in their own homes and remain as independent and safe from risk as possible.
