Stairlifts 101 – Part One

Are you a newcomer to world of stair lifts?  If you are, then some of the terminology and different options available can be confusing initially.  In this series of posts we will take look at stair lift basics in bite size chunks to hopefully give you a better idea what is out there in the market and provide a useful starting point for your research.

The first thing we cover in stair lifts 101 is stair lift type.  There are several different types, but domestic lifts generally fall into two broad categories – straight and curved.  Straight are for straight stairs and curved are for any staircase with any type of bend, or half handing.

Both straight and curved stair lifts run on rails that are attached to the tread of the stairs.  The rails for curved lifts are bespoke, designed and built to hug the turns of the stairs to which they will be installed.  Because of this, curved stair lifts are more expensive than straight versions.

Other types of stair lift include step lifts, through floor lifts and platform lifts.  These lifts are ideal if you are a wheelchair user. These stair lifts do not have a seat, the passenger rides the lift seated in their wheelchair or stood in the lift car. Take a look on the site to see the different models available.

In the next post we will take a look at some of the different features you can expect to find across the different stair lift models.
