Overcoming stairlift doorway problems

Most stairlift installations run perfectly smoothly and pose no problems at all. However, others can be trickier. If, for example, your relative’s stairway features a door at the top or bottom, it could become blocked by the rail of a conventional stairlift.

Fortunately, the top UK stairlift manufacturers have designed stairlift models to get around this issue. Your relative might want to consider a rail that has less of an overhang upstairs. This way, the stairlift won’t stick into the hallway too much; it’s also quite an inexpensive option.

When the door is at the foot of the staircase, a hinged-rail stair lift or folding track is necessary. With this arrangement, the lower part of the rail is folded away when the stairlift is not in use. This allows people to use the door and removes a tripping hazard. As always, it’s best to get independent advice, both from an impartial site like UK Stairlifts and from an occupational therapist. Hinged-rail stairlifts come in a manual or powered version, with the latter making the stair-lift more expensive.

Another option is to end the stairlift rail before the bottom of the stairs, to stop it sticking out into the hallway. This solution makes getting on and off the stairlift tricky and perhaps dangerous, depending on your relative’s mobility. As ever, get professional advice from an occupational therapist.
