Outdoor stair lifts – the ins and outs
Outdoor stair lifts share a lot of characteristics with straight indoor stairlifts. Typically, a strong rail is attached to the stairs, rather than the wall, regardless of what it’s made of. Just like with an indoor stairlift, the arms, seat and footrest can be folded away so that others can use the stairs.
The outdoor stairlift has a swivel seat that the user operates with levers, so that the chair can be turned upwards and in an easy position for getting off. The outdoor stair lift comes with reverse controls for left-handers.
There are directional controls, which can be on either arm, and the outdoor stairlift is operated with a joystick or buttons. For safety, there’s a seatbelt, and safety edges bring the stair lift to a halt if it’s obstructed on its journey.
There’s a keyswitch, too, that can immobilise the outdoor stairlift. This is a great safety feature if there are children around. Finally, the outdoor stair lift can be used in a power cut, thanks to a self-charging battery that charges when the stairlift is not in use.
