Choosing your mobility scooter

If you’re thinking of investing in a mobility scooter for a relative, there are a few points to bear in mind. As a mobility scooter user, they’ll be on the pavement. This means watching out for other people. If their eyesight is not great or they have learning difficulties, it’s best to talk to a doctor before investing in a mobility scooter.

Other things mobility scooter users need to consider are how the scooter will be used -  shopping and walking the dog are two completely different functions. Also, what size are they? The heavier they are, the larger the mobility scooter they’ll need. Think about the position of the controls, too.

What about their local area? Are there many kerbs, hills or bad surfaces? Choose your mobility scooter carefully – they might need one with particularly good suspension, for example.

You might also need to consider a portable mobility scooter if it will be carried in the boot of your loved one’s car or on the bus. These mobility scooters are easily taken apart. Note though that, while these scooters are smaller, this can be at the expense of comfort.

You’ll also need to think about where they store their mobility scooter. It will need to be dry and near a power point, so they can charge their mobility scooter’s battery. Finally, think about the cost – they’ll need to add insurance and maintenance to the purchase price of the mobility scooter.
