British Wheelchair Bowls Association

UK Stairlifts is please to lend its support to the British Wheelchair Bowls Association.

The BWBA was formed in 1982 and is now recognized as the governing body for wheelchair bowls in the UK.  Based in Stoke Mandeville, Aylesbury, the BWBA has members throughout the United Kingdom.

The first Chairman of the Association was Dr. David Peacock who was also arguably, the first wheelchair bowler proper.  Working closely with Peter Bradshaw, inventor of the Bradshaw Buggy, David played a pivotal role in securing acceptance of wheelchair bowlers into national competitions run by the EBA and subsequently, the EIBA.

Since its inception, the BWBA has worked tirelessly to establish wheelchair bowlers’ as equals at clubs, within associations and in the attitudes of fellow, able-bodied bowlers.  The BWBA continues to work closely with bowling governing bodies, advising them on any issues surrounding wheelchair bowlers.

The BWBA don’t just contribute to wheelchair bowls at an organisational level, they offer a tremendous amount of support to people looking to participate in the bowling themselves.

Advice is given to anyone looking to find out more about the sport and the BWBA have their own coaching team to help communicate the nuances of the game to both budding bowlers and experienced hands alike.  The Association hold regular weekends offering training, competitions and opportunities to mix with other wheelchair bowlers and exchange tips!

Two national championships are held per year to give all wheelchair bowlers the chance to test their mettle against competitors from the rest of the UK. Wheelchair hire is also available to members under certain circumstances, if required, for a small fee.
