Stairlifts and tricky stairways
At UK Stairlifts, we’ve fitted many stair lifts over the years. Stairlifts broadly fall into two categories – straight or curved. Straight stair-lifts are relatively straightforward to fit and the whole job can be done and dusted in around an hour. In certain circumstances, we can even fit two lengths of straight stairlift to a curved staircase. But this does depend on your relative being able to manage an ‘in-flight transfer’.
Fitting curved stairlifts can be a little trickier, and the job can take a few hours. Close your eyes and try to imagine all the types of staircase you’ve ever come across. Here are a few that spring to mind.
Top Overrun – a straight staircase but requiring a curve at the top to take the stairlift carriage clear onto the landing.
Bottom Overrun – a straight staircase but requiring a curve at the foot of the stairs to take the stairlift carriage clear into the hallway.
90-degree flat turn – a staircase with a half-landing, with the upper flight taking the stairlift at 90 degrees to the lower flight.
90-degree short radius – a staircase with a 90-degree turn, with stairs continuing around the turn.
180-degree flat turn – a staircase with a half-landing requiring the stair lift to come back on itself 180 degrees.
Double 90-degree flat turn – a staircase with a half-landing, then steps at 90 degrees, then another half-landing and a further set of steps at 90 degrees for the stairlift to negotiate.
270-degree large radius – stair-lift travels up a straight stairway followed by a 270-degree spiral.
